Services
Our ambulance service staffed by highly trained emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics.
- Each of our ambulances is professionally staffed with nationally registered and state-licensed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics who receive on-going education, skills development and quality assurance guidance.
- An Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance is staffed with at least one Paramedic and an EMT. It is stocked with all of the supplies and equipment needed to care for a severely injured or ill patient, such as IV supplies, cardiac monitor, intubation and respiratory support. Paramedics can defibrillate, administer medications and perform other treatments required in emergency situations.
- The level of ambulance service dispatched to each call (ALS or BLS) is based on emergency medical service protocols that take into account the patient’s condition, the duration of the injury or illness, the on-going care or monitoring that the patient may require and availability of resources.

Levy and oversee property tax to help fund urgent care services at Redwood Coast Medical Services, the local non-profit rural medical clinic (the nearest hospital emergency room is 2 hours away).
- Urgent Care Program: Through a taxpayer-funded subsidy by CLSD, urgent care is now provided by Redwood Coast Medical Services seven days per week, 8 am to 6 pm.
- Urgent Care Advice Line: There is an option for after-hours medical advice when the clinic is closed. Redwood Coast Medical Services (RCMS) provides a free after-hours medical advice line to handle non-life-threatening emergencies. The service provides multi-lingual support and can also assist in arranging for ambulance transportation if necessary. All medical advisors are experienced registered nurses licensed in California with physician back-up, working under detailed protocols approved by the RCMS Medical Director. All calls are reviewed for follow-up care by RCMS staff. In addition to advising callers on urgent medical care, nurse advisors can assist patients in making urgent care decisions, possibly avoiding unnecessary trips to city hospital emergency departments.
The Future: The boards of CLSD and RCMS have joined together to craft a long-range plan for improving healthcare services to our community. Toward this end, they are developing a detailed plan for a financially sustainable community healthcare model.
CLSD works in collaboration with other local organizations to develop new health care programs, such as fall prevention for senior citizens.
- Mendonoma Health Alliance (MHA): CLSD is working with two other northern California health care organizations, Redwood Coast Medical Services and Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, to form a vertical healthcare network, the Mendonoma Health Alliance (MHA) to better serve a frontier area. This integrated network will establish an infrastructure to expand access, coordinate, and improve the quality of healthcare services.
- Community Fall Prevention Program: This program was collaboratively developed by board and community members of CLSD, Coastal Seniors, Redwood Coast Medical Services, Aging in Place Mendonoma, and the Sonoma County Area Agency on Aging. The goal is to promote safe and independent lifestyles for the senior population by reducing injuries from falls. The majority of CLSD ambulance calls are for falls and related injuries.
CLSD Service Area
The CLSD service area stretches sixty miles along the coast, from just north of Irish Beach in Mendocino County, to just south of State Park’s Reef Campground in Sonoma County. It also extends inland nearly fifteen miles to include Fort Ross Road, Seaview Road, and parts of Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road and Fish Rock Road. The detailed specification of the district boundaries can be found in the text of Assembly Bill 2672.
